Young people today are being pulled in every direction by culture, social media, entertainment, and peer pressure. But God has not called this generation simply to survive. He has called them to influence the world around them. Faith, like a fire, does not keep burning without fuel, and there are six key ways we can fuel the faith of the next generation. Those ways are through the Word of God, prayer, godly relationships, a clear sense of purpose, authenticity from the adults around them, and consistent, ongoing discipleship that protects the fire from going out.
One of the most powerful things we can do for young people is to stop telling them that someday God will use them and start telling them that God can use them today. The Bible is full of young people God used in remarkable ways, from David and Samuel to Timothy and Mary. At the same time, young people need to see authentic faith modeled by the adults in their lives. They do not need perfection. They need honesty. When we share our testimonies of struggle, doubt, and God's faithfulness, we give young people a foundation to stand on when their own faith is tested.
The church has a critical role to play in raising a generation of faith. Our youth are not the church of tomorrow. They are the church today. That means we must move beyond simply entertaining them and commit to truly discipling them. We must give them Scripture, pray with them, listen to them, mentor them, and model the kind of faith we are asking them to embrace. Faith is caught as much as it is taught, and the fire God has placed in this generation is absolutely worth protecting.
